Afforestation Initiative in the Tribal Belt of Ganjam District, Odisha

Biswashok Foundation initiated an afforestation project in the tribal belt of Ganjam district, Odisha, a region increasingly affected by indiscriminate tree cutting, soil degradation, and declining natural resources. The project was designed not just to plant trees, but to address the root causes of deforestation through community involvement and awareness.

Recognizing that sustainable change cannot happen without local participation, BAF partnered directly with tribal villagers. Local community members actively took part in plantation drives, land preparation, and sapling care, ensuring ownership and long-term responsibility for the planted trees. This approach also created short-term livelihood support through community-driven work.

Alongside plantation, BAF carried out tribal welfare and community development activities, linking environmental conservation with everyday needs such as water retention, soil fertility, and agricultural sustainability. Educational sessions were conducted to explain the long-term impact of afforestation—how trees protect livelihoods, regulate climate, prevent erosion, and secure resources for future generations.

This initiative strengthened environmental awareness within the community while empowering tribal families to become protectors of their own ecosystem. The project stands as a step toward restoring ecological balance while aligning environmental action with tribal welfare and community development.
