Pond Cleaning Initiative in Rural Areas of Ganjam District, Odisha

Biswashok Foundation undertook a pond cleaning initiative in rural areas of Ganjam district, Odisha, where community ponds serve as the primary source for bathing, fishing, and daily household needs. Over time, lack of maintenance, waste accumulation, and neglect had led to deteriorating water quality, directly affecting health and livelihoods.

The initiative focused on restoring these ponds through systematic cleaning and desilting, carried out with active participation from local villagers. Community members were involved at every stage, ensuring that the ponds were not only cleaned but also protected from future degradation.

In parallel, BAF conducted awareness sessions to educate villagers on practical and sustainable methods to keep ponds clean. These included waste management practices, preventing dumping, controlling runoff, and simple community-led monitoring systems. The emphasis was on low-cost, locally manageable processes that could be sustained without external dependence.

Through this initiative, Biswashok Foundation helped improve water quality, protect fishing-based livelihoods, and reinforce the importance of collective responsibility in managing shared natural resources. The project strengthened community ownership while promoting long-term environmental and public health benefits in rural Ganjam.
